Mixed and Improper Fractions

Mixed Fraction

A mixed fraction consists of a whole number and a fraction together.

Improper Fraction

An improper fraction is a fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator.

Examples:

 
Express an Improper Fraction as a Mixed Fraction

Improper fractions can be expressed as mixed fractions using division.

To change a fraction from improper to mixed:

  1. Divide the denominator into the numerator.
  2. Put the remainder over the denominator.
  3. Write the mixed fraction as the division result and the remainder over the denominator

Express a Mixed Fraction as an Improper Fraction

Mixed fractions can be expressed as improper fractions.

To change a fraction from mixed to improper:

  1. Multiply the denominator and the whole number.
  2. Add the numerator to the product from Step 1.
  3. Write the result from Step 2 over the denominator
