Vocabulary

Here are some terms you should be able to define.

decimal
A linear array of numbers based upon ten or any multiple of ten.

decimal fraction
A fraction with an unwritten denominator of 10 or a power of ten. It is expressed by placing a decimal point before the numerator.

decimal place
The position of a number to the right of a decimal point.

decimal point
The period placed to the left of a decimal fraction.

decimal system
A number system based upon the number 10 or multiples of 10.

denominator
The number below the line in a fraction. It indicates the number of equal parts into which the whole is divided. It is also known as the divisor.

dividend
The number that is divided. It is also known as the numerator.

divisor
The number that is divided into another number or the number by which another can be divided. It is also known as the denominator.

fraction
The result of dividing or breaking a whole number into parts.

lowest common denominator (LCD)
The smallest multiple that the denominators of a set of fractions have in common.

lowest terms
A fraction in which the numerator and denominator have no common factors is said to be in lowest terms. This is also called a reduced fraction.

mixed number
A whole number plus a fraction. Also called a mixed fraction.

multiplier
The number by which another number is multiplied. It is also known as the multiplicand.

numerator
The number above the line in a fraction. It is the number of parts into which a unit or number may be divided. It is also known as the dividend.

product
The number found by multiplying two or more numbers.
