Divide Fractions

To divide two fractions, we must change the expression to multiplication. To do this we use the reciprocal of the divisor (second fraction). Here are the steps:

  1. Change any mixed fractions to improper.
  2. Change the division sign to multiplication
  3. Take the reciprocal of the divisor (the second fraction)
  4. Multiply the numerators and denominators.
  5. Simplify the fraction.

Example

When dividing fractions you do not need a common denominator as you do when adding and subtracting fractions.
