
WE OFFER TWO PROGRAMS
Course Description:
This 120-hour Patient Care Technician Program provides students with the knowledge and basic skills needed to perform the duties required of Patient Care Technicians. The course encompasses the theory needed and classroom hands on education and offers a 100-hour Clinical Externship available to students who successfully complete the course.
TOPICS TO BE COVERED
• Function of the patient care department in a variety of settings (hospital, clinic, office, mobile service, long term care facilities)
• Patient care & safety of patients, medical & legal aspects and work ethics
• Anatomy of each of the body systems to include the heart, conduction system, circulation of the heart and blood vessels
• Aseptic technique and infection prevention
• Preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures and diagnostic testing
• HIPAA, patient confidentiality, legal aspects of healthcare and office and patient care related regulatory issues
• Recording and taking of vital signs, blood pressure, and other patient care items related to the physicians office visit
• Review and administration of medications and other pharmacology related items
• Laboratory procedures, Phlebotomy and the proper techniques to collect specimens for laboratory analysis
• Cardiology and the proper placement of leads when taking a 12 lead EKG
• National Certification: This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) - Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT); Certified Nurse Technician (CNT); and/or Certified Patient Care Associate (CPCA) national certification exam. This exam costs $149 plus tax per student
• Clinical Externship: Program includes a 100-hour clinical externship opportunity with a local healthcare provider.
About Patient Care Technicians:
Patient Care Technicians work in hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, long term care facilities, physician offices and assisted living facilities. These professionals must possess the technical skills necessary to service complex patient care issues including: rehabilitation services, diagnostic tests, basic bedside care, collection of laboratory specimens, Phlebotomy and EKG’s. In addition to labs requiring a student to practice and demonstrate EKG, Phlebotomy and base line nursing skills, lecture topics of this program include: medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and miscellaneous patient care concepts. Other topics include: HIPAA; vital signs; patient care; personal hygiene and grooming and aseptic technique among others.
Career Opportunities:
Typical duties that nurses use to perform are now being performed by (P.C.T.s). Patient Care Technicians are employed by Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Doctor's Offices, labs and Clinics.
This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) - Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT); Certified Nurse Technician (CNT); and/or Certified Patient Care Associate (CPCA) national certification exams.
Course fee: $1,899 (includes books, materials, and 100-hour Clinical Externship).
Prerequisites:
Minimum 18 yrs of age, high school diploma or GED requried.

This specialized training is appropriate for: Anyone interested in a medical health career, Medical Assistants, Patient Care Technicians, CNA’s, Phlebotomists, EMT’S, Licensed Practical Nurses and RN’s.
Course Description:
This 62-hour Dialysis Technician Program provides students with the knowledge and basic skills needed to perform the duties required of Dialysis Technicians. The course encompasses the theory needed and classroom hands on education. Students will have the opportunity to experience clinical observations at outpatient Dialysis units.
TOPICS TO BE COVERED
• Basic Chemistry of Body Fluids and Electrolytes
• Renal Physiology and the Pathology of Renal Failure
• Laboratory Data: Analysis and Interpretation and Machine Monitoring
• Acute Renal Failure and Dialysis
• Principles of hemodialysis, procedure, techniques, and adequacy
• Patient's assessment, psychosocial and nutritional needs
Note: On the first day of class students need to provide a copy of their immunization records and documentation of a negative TB skin test/chest x-ray in order to participate in the clinical observation experiences. This program does not include a national or state certification as part of its overall objectives.
About Dialysis Technicians:
• Under the supervision of a registered nurse, Dialysis Technicians operate dialysis machines, initiate, monitor and terminate Dialysis treatments for patients suffering from kidney failure (renal disease).
• Dialysis Technicians assess patients for any complications that may occur during the treatment and must be knowledgeable regarding which necessary measures to administer.
• Dialysis Technicians (PCT’s) also educate patients about diet, fluid intake, and access care and provide emotional support to patients when needed.
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is required upon hire.
Career Opportunities:
• Dialysis technicians work in a dialysis unit (clinic, outpatient setting) operated by private companies or by an independent physician
• With experience dialysis technicians can advance to the acute setting (in patient, hospital)..

Course description:
This 72 clock hour comprehensive course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board's PTCB exam. Technicians work in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other health care settings - working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement.
All classes are taught by an Interim Licensed or Practicing Registered Pharmacist or Doctor of Pharmacy or Certified Pharmacy Technician who brings real life experience to the classroom. A Recognition of Completion document is granted upon successful completion.
Course fee: $915.00 (includes books and materials).
Prerequisites:
High School Diploma or GED. Knowledge of basic arithmetic/math (primarily proportions and fractions).

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2008-09 report estimates employment for pharmacy technicians will grow much faster than for the average occupation—up to a 32 percent increase by 2016. As the demand for pharmacy technicians continues to grow, certification is expected to play an increasingly more important role in assuring the public of safe, accurate and efficient patient care and service.

Refund Policy
Class fees will be refunded in full for classes canceled by Phoenix College .
Class fees will also be refunded if students withdraw from a class prior to the first class meeting. Failure to attend class does not guarantee being withdrawn or being eligible for a refund. Responsibility for withdrawing remains with the students. Students may withdraw from a class by contacting Admissions and Records in person or by telephone at 602-285-7777.
