CRITERION #5 SUBCOMMITTEE MEETING

April 26, 2004

Present: Brent J., Sara R., Christy S., Nan R., Joseph K, Raul S., Cheryl A., Dianne G., Julie S., Adriana L.

Members reviewed the minutes of the last meeting and submitted corrections.

Members then began looking at 5a scans: 5 Shoes waiting to drop, MCCD Scan. They started looking at what some of the pieces of information are.

5 Shoes Morrison Institute:

Talent Shake-up (Raul S.) A handout was given in which this section was summarized.

  1. We need to assess the needs of those coming (immigrating) to this area and what we can do to reach them.
  2. Diversity of age – Concept of elder hostel to address baby boomers quality of life. How can the college utilize, reengage this population.
  3. Connect with younger population, high school, etc. What is the colleges’ involvement with the up and coming, ex. Digital, Nano and Bio technology? Are B.A.’s still needed, where is P.C. in this?
  4. Educational Attainment  (immigrants vs. U.S. citizens). The majority of those coming in only have nine years of attainment, only a small group of the population has college level education. Immigrants may have different needs from U.S. citizens.  This ties into section one also, about assessing our needs.
  5. If a large number of raw human capital is immigrating, then our responsibility tot hem is much different than if people were educated. Getting people with what skills they have. Two divergent groups of needs: aging and younger.

Fuzzy Economic IdentityArizona economy (Dianne G.)

              I.      A split personality is developing: the old west mentality vs. the active mentality (or the built world), retired vs. younger generation.

II.      There are six things that should be promoted, of these six we need to focus on four: smart people and educational opportunities, technology leadership, art and cultural entertainment and diverse ethnic and cultural heritages. Focus on furthering our programs; high tech knowledge equal knowledge producers.

III.      Phoenix College is looking at Bioscience pathways, part of the bioscience commission. Need higher educational standards. Looking at states identity, career opportunities; PC career development committee, career track. Need to retain experienced employees.

Latino Dilemma – Frank

Big Educational Gaps for attainment. Lower tax revenues as this group works in service roles (areas that earn less jobs, thus there is less of a tax base.)

Revenue

·        Tax base is narrowing which generates less revenue.

·        Revenue from taxes supports legislative budget for community colleges (Phoenix College)

·        Most tax revenue is generated from non-service economy (manufacturing), but Arizona economy is service based. Need to really look at equaling out tax. Service economy does not equal manufacturing taxes.

Data Collection

  • What level of detail is necessary? This committee’s job is to look at what they receive then analyze and decipher it.
  • Need to look at the history of the different programs since 1996. How did they develop or what big changes have happened in the last ten years?
  • Have we looked at everything? Surveys to find out what’s happening, fairs, focus groups. Provide examples with incentives, i.e. free massages, dental.
  • On the website have an area for virtual surveys.

Parameters (to consider it as a program):

  • Meets the mission
  • Dialogue at different levels of institution: advisory committee, dialogue between high schools and Phoenix College, grants,
  • Serves the common good, it is valuable, beneficial to both parties
  • Listening to needs, creating opportunities for the students and the community.

Questions:

  1. What data or information did you collect to determine a need existed?
  2. What data or survey results did you compile to verify that the goals were achieved?
  3. What are the strengths and the areas of improvement of this program?
  4. Recommendations?
  5. History of the programs development.
