HLC SELF-STUDY Criterion # 5 Subcommittee Meeting February 23, 2004 Members Present: Cheryl A., Julie S., Christy S., Sara R., Nan R., Trino S., Rebecca V., Cassandra K., Nellie T., Dianne G., Joseph K., Raul S., Frank L., Brent J. Review of Minutes Members reviewed minutes from January meeting for review with corrections noted. Members were informed that minutes from the February 11th meeting were incomplete and would be resubmitted to the committee at our next meeting. Definition of Engagement and Service The definition of Engagement and Service as describe in the HLC Handbook was reviewed. The committee then discussed the definition of Engagement and Service at Phoenix College as: Guided by the mission of the college and driven by dialogue across different levels of the institution and community, Engagement and Service at Phoenix College is expressed by programs and activities which serve the common good and are deemed valuable and beneficial for both the institution and the community. There is an interaction between the institution and the community which involves listening to each others needs and creating opportunities for the mutual benefit of the students, institution and community. Examples of Assessing Effective Engagement and Service CTE : Survey of department chairs and external constituents at program level to determine needs and satisfaction with services delivered ADVISORY Survey students, graduates, program and employers COMMITTEES: Job placement occurs within departments RECRUITMENT High school counselors needs surveys AND RETENTION: DENTAL, THERAPEUTIC Conducts exit interviews of students MASSAGE PROGRAMS: (Do other depts. do this?) (Does A&R do exit interviews) (Does Title V do this? Ask Maria Enciso) ALUMNI: 5 years ago, conducted survey of 15,000 grads, received 600 surveys. Results used to structure the Office of Alumni and Development. MARKETING Web stories articles on web re: activities on & P.R. campus and in community. Presidents update for internal communications PRESIDENTS Roundtable meetings OFFICE All Employee meetings bring internal community in touch with information on campus and community STAFF DEV: Day of Learning across campus for all employees GAPS IN ASSESSING EFFECTIVE ENGAGEMENT AND SERVICE What systematic way is used to evaluate whether the service is valuable or beneficial (per definition above)? Beyond the department level, where does assessment and evaluation of effective Engagement and Service occur at PC? Occupational programs go through program review with Dean of Instruction Academic Departments work through Instructional Councils, Curriculum department, Dean of Instruction office. In addition, Articulation Task Forces made up of university and community college faculty review curriculum based on changes proposed by either institution. Student Services discuss service area needs and ways to continually improve WHAT DO WE WANT TO DO WITH THIS COMMITTEE (GOALS)
