CRITERION #5 SUBCOMMITTEE MEETING

October, 4, 2004

Present: Joseph, Nan, Cheryl, Frank, Trino, Sara, Brent, Julie

The group began by reviewing the minutes from the last meeting, some changes were made, these will be revised and distributed.

Update from Cheryl regarding the two tasks she had – technology changes and the expansion of testing services. She went to Rosemary S., and Rosemary S. let us know that she can give us whatever information we want. She mentioned trends; she can give us the data we need for however far back we want. Student development asked how use of technology has changed, two big things are the new student system, applicability system, using as an example. She asked for examples of how technology or use of technology has changed since 1996. In Admissions it is the use of touchnet, re-entry, hardware and software. A concern was that there wasn’t a heavy response. What they seem to be responding to is tell us what you want to know then we will gather and get it to you, let us know how specific.   Some examples of this are: Students can now register from anywhere, grade mailers no-longer. How is this technology used to get information to our students and community?

Need to get the program reviews for academic and occupational areas for those departments that we need information from. We will need the actual program review and the interview information.  For the summaries from the program reviews we need bullets or short statements, just a few paragraphs, it needs to be a summation, needs to have a brief history, succinct examples and evaluative language.

Questions the group came up with to use when interviewing people:

Instructions: in 2-3 pages, briefly answer the following questions, using summary statements and any charts, graphs, bullets, lists, etc.

1.      What services do you provide and how does your department support college mission?

2.      What ways does your department foster the inclusion of diverse ideas and people? What strategies do you use to meet the needs of special populations?

3.      How does your department learn about the needs of those we serve (students, staff, and community). How do you use this information and how do you share it across the campus/community? (Needs assessment)

4.      How does your department assess whether the departments programs and activities are beneficial to those you serve? (Evaluation)

5.      How does the department use information/data/trends to improve services? How do you use feedback from students, community, or campus? (Decisions)

o       Information – what is gathered, data, not directly from the student

o       Feedback – when you ask the students directly

6.      How does your department collaborate with K-12 schools or other higher education institutions?

7.      How does your department engage students, faculty, staff, and community? What community partnerships exist?

8.      Describe 2-3 of your departments’ best practices.

9.      Does your department prepare any regular reports that would be important for the self-study?

How does the college assess its ability to provide additional services (this question goes to admin, not on the survey)
