HLC / NCA Criterion 4 Committee Meeting
Monday 2/28/05 - 2 to 4 p.m.
Dental Building Conference Room

Minutes of the meeting:

I. Attendance: The following were present at the meeting: Karen C, Linn D, Elaine P, Lynn M, Laura A, Debi M, Kristen A
Nan R, Brent J, .Sandra W., Charles T.

II. Announcements: Charles T., an Honors Program student, is interested in participating in the self-study, and is present at the meeting today. Diane Nyhammer, NCA Staff Liason, has resigned, and Karen Solomon has been assigned PC's interim Staff Liason. She will visit PC on 3/24. If any committee member has particular questions for her to be asked during the visit, please let Karen C. know. Mesa's self study is completed and is available online http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/selfstudy/selfstudy_report.html .

III. Review of Core Component 4B Draft

  • More is needed in the draft to address how PC prepares students to live in a technological society.
  • Discussion about the numerous students taking WebCT, online courses who do not appear to be prepared to use the technology required for these courses. Assistance has been offered in the form of online tutorials, help-desk, and in-person orientation sessions, but students have not taken advantage of these - they prefer one-on-one assistance which is not feasible or efficient for LTD staff to provide. The success rate of these students in online courses is questionable. Other issues re online courses: syllabus isn't posted before course starts, faculty don't respond to students in a timely manner, evaluation tool not required, generic syllabus doesn't list faculty name - students don't know faculty name; $120,000 is available for summer grants to develop hybrid courses, LTD staff are evaluating how to improve WebCT courses
  • Question about general ed. computer course and/or content requirement
  • Info Literacy Assessment Committee may have data on students' technological skills using electronic resources
  • The DDP's Center for Health Professions online courses have received national recognition (#1) for their courses.
  • The Library received a #1 rating from an outside review agency.
  • A new "template" was developed for the Program Planning & Evaluation Process (Linn will submit)
  • We may expand on our description and evaluation of the Occ Program Advisory Committees since these appear to be very relevant and important to 4C.
  • Ethnomusicology is an excellent example of a course that focuses on global, historical and diverse competencies. Foreign language, Asian, Sign Language courses, also.
  • Age diversity is significant at PC
  • What is the # or % of students who participate in clubs?
  • Evening and distance learners do not have the opportunity to participate in clubs - are there plans to offer club opportunities for them?
  • There are numerous opportunities for employees to enhance their cultural, diversity competence: Infusing Diversity in the Curriculum, Diversity courses - District; Hispanic Awareness courses and study tours, counseling Dept. courses
