Developmental English Assessment Report Objectives (Developmental English had been operating under two sets of objectives based on our affiliation.) For Department Developmental English (on Department Web Site) · To provide students whose placement scores indicate that they need a review of English related materials at a particular level the opportunity to get the review. · To provide students the opportunity to review English skills based on a personal assessment or desire to learn. · To promote student writing with writing skills to help them function successfully in 100 level college classes. * To provide students with basic writing skills to function successfully in traditional life situations. For Developmental English (As stated by the National Association for Developmental Education - NADE) · To preserve and make possible educational opportunity for each post secondary learner. · To develop in each learner the skills and attitudes necessary for the attainment of academic career and life goals. · To ensure proper placement by assessing each learners level of preparedness for college course work. · To maintain academic standards by enabling learners to acquire competencies needed for success in mainstream college courses. · To enhance the retention of students. · To promote the continued development and application of cognitive and affective learning theory. Assessment Activities · Approximately every two years Developmental English evaluates the textbooks that are being used and entertains the selection of new books. (Recently 2002-2003 year and current 2003-2004 year) · The Developmental English instructors researched the recommended class size for developmental classes and recommended to the Dean of Instruction that a 20 student limit be established for each Developmental English class. Student success and retention are being monitored under this approved format. (Fall 2001 Current). · Two Developmental English instructors have piloted the Study Skills instrument that is being used for the current Developmental Education Assessment process. (Summer 2002) · Developmental English has been instrumental in participating in the Title V Program by using the SmartBoard in Developmental English classes to increase students use of technology in the classroom. (2002-2003 year and 2003-2004 year) · Some Developmental English instructors have been involved in professional growth opportunities to help improve their pedagogical techniques, such as the Southwest Association for Developmental Education (SWADE) and the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE). ·
The Developmental English instructors have created
on-line developmental writing and grammar exercises which can be accessed
in the library and the ·
The Developmental English instructors have investigated
related software and have had it installed in the library and · Various instructors have in-class mid-term assessments. · The Developmental English instructors have frequently requested Developmental English statistical data from the campus research department to evaluate classroom effectiveness as it relates to retention and student success in Developmental English classes and follow-up classes. · An Academic Alliance, The Maricopa English Teachers Network (METNET), was established to have monthly meetings with feeder high school Phoenix Union High School English instructors. (Fall 1990-1993) · Various workshops on English mechanics were provided by the Developmental English instructors to reinforce English skills for students. (Fall 1990 Spring 1993) |
