HLC Criterion 3 Meeting Notes

March 10, 2004

The HLC Criterion 3 Subcommittee met February 23, 2004.  In attendance were Mike Mitchell, Chair;  Joy Fitzpatrick; Kristin Anderson; Lily Kang; John Arle; Liz O’Brien; Ofelia Canez; and Don Richardson.

Mike began the meeting by distributing a rough draft outline for the HLC final report and for Criterion 3—Student Learning and Effective Teaching--which was drafted by Nancy Matte and Patricia Zaccardo.  The purposes of this template outline are to get the subcommittees thinking in parallel and to produce a structure which will be easy for a reader to follow.

Mike also welcomed Adriana Loera, NCA secretary for chair meetings, etc.  Adriana is a full-time resource person who will be housed in HC3, the Resource Room; all hard copy documents will be located in HC3 also.

The members agreed to spend the time brainstorming about resources useful for demonstrating compliance with criterion 3b, “The organization values and supports effective teaching.”

Using the Examples of Evidence (or bullet points), the members came up with the following:

  • “Qualified faculty determine curricular content and strategies for instruction.

3b could be a listing of relevant items with examples archived in the resource center.  Maybe it does not need to be text based.  We could list all seven bullets with the points of evidence beneath them.

Members agreed that the next meeting will focus on 3c after assigning responsibilities for gathering evidence for 3b.

The next meetings are scheduled for April 5, April 19, and May 5.  The committee goal is to conclude brainstorming this semester.

Respectfully submitted,

Don Richardson
