Budget Development FY 2000-2001 Department Mission & Goals Dept_Title Liberal Arts Mission Statement: The Liberal Arts Department of Phoenix College provides comprehensive, quality education across the various social and behavioral sciences as well as classical humanistic disciplines of history and philosophy. We offer courses ranging from classics, history, economics, philosophy, political science and religious studies to the more recently established American Indian, Chicano/a, and Southwestern studies. Goals: 1. To provide lower division courses in various disciplines of the humanities and social sciences to meet baccalaureate general studies requirements of four-year institutions. 2. To create a learning environment that reflects the diversity and changing needs of the community by promoting access to quality education to all populations within the community. 3. To promote academic excellence through the support of the Honors Program as well as student activities that enhance the creation of learning communities and promotes student success. 4. To promote interdisciplinary studies in the humanities and the social sciences with the aim of global awareness and democratic citizenship. 5. To recruit and retain qualified faculty who reflect and embrace the diversity of the community we service. 6. To develop and maintain relationships with the community, including
schools, universities, business, and public and private institutions,
which will enhance the success of our students in pursuit of baccalaureate
