LEGAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT

MISSION STATEMENT & GOALS


Mission Statement:
The Legal Studies Department at Phoenix College is dedicated to providing stimulating, relevant learning opportunities, and current career and articulation information for students interested in the diverse family of law-related occupations, through the collaborative efforts of all members of the Department.

Goals: As an integrated Department, we will work with our students, the College and the wider community to provide an environment that nurtures educational excellence, so as to most effectively promote:


I. SUCCESS FOR ALL OUR STUDENTS
a. We will enhance the employability and placement of our students and graduates by providing them with the technology skills and other practical skills sought by employers in the community.
b. We will recruit and retain diverse students who reflect a demographic cross-section of the community, especially in the Legal Assisting Program.
c. We will develop the critical thinking and communication skills of students.
d. We will increase student participation in Internship programs.

II. ONGOING PROGRAM AND CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT
a. We will revitalize our program curricula, emphasizing the flexibility needed to incorporate new developments affecting law-related careers.
b. We will develop effective alternative methods for the delivery of education and skills training.
c. We will continue the development and refinement of a program for the training of Tribal Court Advocates.
d. We will explore practical methods of team-teaching in the Legal Assisting Program, pairing attorney instructors with professional legal assistants.
e. We will promote effective articulation with four-year colleges and universities.

III. MEANINGFUL OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF FACULTY AND STAFF.
a. We will support continuing dialogue and increased cooperation among our Department faculty, staff and Advisory Committee members, to create a work environment characterized by teamwork and mutual respect.
b. We will improve the technology skills of faculty and staff.
c. We will more fully integrate adjunct faculty, recognizing their strengths as an important Departmental resource.
d. We will continue to offer in-service training in teaching methods to faculty, including adjunct faculty.
