Department Mission
In response to the needs and goals of a diverse student population,
the Department of English at Phoenix College will provide a learning
environment that addresses students' life-long needs in written communication,
literature, and the humanities. To this end, competency based courses
will be offered that enhance student learning and the development
of writing skills. Sequences of course in English, developmental English,
ESL, and creative writing enable students to attain writing skills
and educational, occupational, and special-interest goals. Courses
in literature and humanities support students' transfer and life-long
learning goals. All courses and services offered by the Department
will support student learning and student educational needs or occupational
goals.
Department Goals
1. Students will use writing skills to communicate effectively.
2. Students and faculty will employ the latest technology that benefits
writing.
3. Students will learn to think critically when they write and read.
4. Students will display an understanding of multiculturalism in their
writing and in their reading of literature.
5. Faculty will enhance student learning by using the most appropriate
methods, materials, and equipment.
6. Faculty will retain students in class by enabling or enhancing
student success.
7. The Department will make available people, equipment, and services
that facilitate student learning.
8. The Department will offer college classes, workshops, and activities
that satisfy both traditional and non-traditional students' divergent
needs.
9. The Department will provide equipment and supplies to teachers
so they will enable students to learn most effectively.
10. The Department will offer continuous daily services to students
and faculty in order to enhance student learning.
11. The Department will recruit and retain faculty committed to departmental
mission and goals.
12. The Department will serve as an intellectual and cultural resource
for students and community.
