One of the ways in which Phoenix College supports all learners and respect diversity is through the various student clubs and organizations. In Fall 2004, there are approximately twenty-six student clubs. The student clubs provide a forum for a variety of learners. For instance, the clubs include the following professional or academic related organizations:
The student organizations also include a clubs that provides the diverse population of students the opportunity to help them develop academically, socially and culturally.
These student clubs are involved with providing additional educational efforts that support and recognize diversity. For instance, MEChA plans an annual conference for high school and college students focused on leadership, issues facing Hispanic students, and the development of successful college skills. AWARE hosts workshops on issues facing re-entry students. The Black Student Union hosts a conference and fair on historically black serving colleges and universities. Finally, the student organizations provide opportunities for students to explore their interests, meet others, and learn new skills:
Phoenix College is supportive of student initiatives and encourages students, faculty, and staff to organize additional student organizations based on need and demand. Recent initiatives include Amnesty International (2002), the Fashion Network (2003), Student Activities, Involvement and Leadership (2004), and the Chess Club (2004). The Office of Student Life and Leadership provides additional opportunities that support student learning and respects diversity. For instance, the Office of Student Life and Leadership offers a Fall Student Leadership Retreat that enables students to build relationships and learn leadership skills. The Office of Student Life and Leadership has a budget funds to provide educational opportunities for the campus for Hispanic Heritage Month, Native American Heritage Month, Black History Month, and Asian-American Heritage Month. Events include educational displays, talent showcases with performances by students, employees, and professionals, field trips, lectures, and workshops. Other initiatives include the Winter Holiday Decorating Contest, in which the clubs create educational displays of winter holidays celebrated around the world. The Office of Student Life and Leadership operates out of the Bears Den, a student lounge. The Office of Student Life and Leadership tries to create a friendly, welcoming environment for students in the Bears Den that is open to all students. Students can study, watch television, play games, read magazines, attend club meetings, and pick up information about different opportunities on and off campus. The Office of Student Life and Leadership also monitors bulletin board space throughout campus that advertise opportunities for students. |
