Student Life and Leadership Mission

The mission of the Office of Student Life and Leadership is to serve the needs of students in leadership development, campus and community involvement, and group interaction. Phoenix College believes that additional learning can take place for the student outside of the classroom and strives to provide these opportunities on and off campus.

On campus, students can participate in over 25 different student organizations. Off-campus opportunities also exist. For instance, the office takes students on a three-day off-campus Student Leadership Retreat in the fall. The retreat is aimed at students that are not already in leadership positions or actively involved in campus life as a way of encouraging them to participate in campus life when they return to campus. In 2003, of the students that attended, four returned to become presidents of student clubs, two others became club officers, one became a Phoenix College Ambassador, and several others attained scholarships or became involved in other aspects of campus life. Student club officers also participate in two district-wide leadership retreats that are held off-campus.

Phoenix College also supports additional off-campus opportunities that involve students in the community, such as the Student Public Policy Forum and Arizona Town Hall. In the Student Public Policy Forum, students learn how public policy is formed, meet with politicians at various levels and attend a summit in Washington, D.C. In Arizona Town Hall, students attend a three-day summit of prominent Arizona citizens to discuss an issue facing Arizona and develop a report and recommendation that is presented to the Arizona Legislature.
