CCTI – Career Pathway

Phoenix College is committed to the partnership created with the Phoenix Union High School District, the PC/SMC Teacher Prep High School, the Arizona Department of Education Career and Technical Education Division Education Professions, Arizona universities and other key entities in maintaining smooth pathways from high school to college for future teachers.

PC TEAC, Teacher Education Advisory Council- This Council becomes the PC CCTI School Site Team, which is one of the delivery tools used in marketing the program.

As a support to CCTI, the Council will assist in coordinating, implementing and assessing the goals of the program.  Listed below is its membership:

CCTI Activities – 2003-2004 (Communications)

The PC TEAC meets once a month in a regular meetings setting. This activity brings an understanding and creates the support of idea that is directly related to the classroom.

The Council receives CCTI updates that allow the group to work together to create the smooth career pathway.  The team continues to support the focus on the development of academically rigorous program of study in the Education Professions areas. 

CCTI activities for 2003-2004 include conference attendance, networking, advisement, recruitment trips, class, course and program offerings, mentoring, consultation and monthly student orientation programs and events.

            -Attended the CCTI 2004 Summit- League of Innovation

            -PC TEAC monthly meetings

-Recruitment trips-PC Teacher Education material; daily

-PC Future Teachers’ Club Meetings- 10 meeting each Fall/Spring Semesters

            -volunteering in K-12 schools/service learning

            -university/K-12 Principals/teachers speakers

-scholarship fundraising (award 2, $500.00 University Transfer Scholarships every semester

-monitor AzTEC scholarship recipients

-Communication with HS Program Clubs (PUHS)

-PC Faculty, Ofelia Canez nominated as the ASU College of Education Alumni Association Ex. Board Member; Chair of ASU Student Council Relationship Committee; 2003-present

-General Freshman Spring and Fall Orientations (August/January)

-Academic Advisement – Special sessions for CCTI/Education Professions- March 2004-High School registration week

-Annual Teacher Education Convocation sessions; am and pm- April 2004

-PC Career and Job Fair, April 2004

-General CCTI MCCCD meetings; Sept. 03- Present (May 19, 2004)

-PC Team initial meeting with Rene Manning, MCCCD Director of Special Projects, October 03; March 04-developed a distribution list to creative an effective communication tool.

Teacher Education;

-Continuous meetings with Phoenix Union High School Principal and personnel

  (Sept.03-Feb. 2004); begin to identify students who will transfer to PC- Fall 04;

-Meeting with Jan Brite, Education Program Specialist Education Professions; Arizona Dept of Education Career and Technical Education, (Feb 2004)

-Creation of the PC Teacher Education web page

Summer 04

-Meet with PUHS/Teacher Prep HS Principal for planning- Fall 2004

Ideas:

Initiate Marketing Plans-

-To strengthen and carry out the outcomes 1-5 (which outline the need for achievement –basically is the problem) of the MCCCD CCTI Improvement Plan with a focus of identifying our parents and students:

Create a marketing plan which includes strategies, timelines/deadlines; description of activities; action steps and the contact of key PC TEAC member:


May 24, 2004-initiate study

Research: What are we marketing? To whom are we marketing? What student’s say they are going to do after HS and what do they really do; Labor Market information that includes salaries.  The focus is to understand the problem before buying into the solution.

-Description of whom we are marketing and what we are marketing;

-Design a Community Awareness Campaign

-Identify internal audiences: students, parents, K-12 administrators;   school boards; PTA; Central office personnel, PC site administration, Academic and Technical teachers; Guidance Counselors, Universities

-External audiences: Future students; parents; Business, industry and labor; Community groups and agencies; general public (Middle school – College for Kids)

Invite PC TEAC to a general meeting and review ideas-proposed ideas; assignments

Identify:

Improving Academic Performance

Review student tracking; sharing information; Career Pathways; Career Development-program of studies; career clusters; contextual teaching – blocks; cohorts.

-Sharing information between College and HS. Classroom level; building level; % of recent HS graduates entering Phoenix College programs; Remediation levels; GPA; Retention efforts.

Staff Development

Attend and promote the MCCCD Council of Teacher Education; Education and Instructional Council and the National Association of Community Colleges Teacher Education Programs, Arizona Career and Technical Education.  These groups become a joint staff development that addresses different levels; different teaching methodologies; infusing academics in Career and Technical Education courses; includes business& industry creating pathway partners that share staff development and align calendars to share opportunities.
