An interesting experience that I have just learned in networking with faculty of the college was the way in which we have all gained beneficial knowledge by our collaboration. On one particular situation, I contacted Ms. Dworakowski, Health Care Core (HCC) instructor, about some students. She informed me of a student and her needs. I immediately contacted the student and got her into the tutoring center (Math & Science Center). As a result, the student was able to relate to the tutor’s teaching method and returned to ask me if she could switch instructors for that particular class. Fortunately, we were able to make the switch to accommodate her needs. I contacted Ms. Dworakowski to inform her of the change, in which she was very inquisitive about the whole incident. She wanted to contact the new instructor and welcome helpful teaching advice.  Our group efforts accomplished helpful assistance to a student that otherwise may have dropped the class had we not intervened.

Another instance that stands out in mind is working individually with Ms. Marcotte, an adjunct HIT and HCC instructor. Ms. Marcotte heard of my ESL Advisor duties through an email that I had sent out to departmental chairs. We spoke candidly about issues concerning student population in her HCC classes. Of particular interest were the ESL students. We discussed skills, such as comprehension, grammar writing, students’ backgrounds, their goals, etc. I informed her of the college’s resources, not just in the tutoring center, but other departments. To my surprise, she was not aware of a lot of them.

Currently, we are keeping in touch this semester and will be researching software available in the Learning Center Computer Lab. She may be considering incorporating grammar software as a helpful teaching tool in her curriculum.  An important observation is that there may be other instructors out there who are willing to better serve their students’ specific needs and they must be included in the loop of information at the college.
