Numeracy Rubric For Phoenix College

To assess a sample of student work, the evaluator will determine if the student has or has not demonstrated the following outcomes.  If the assignment did not give the student the opportunity to demonstrate a particular outcome, the evaluator will record “NA” for Not Applicable.

1.     Analyze a given problem by

  • formulating a question
  •   identifying relevant information
  • identifying missing information
  •   finding additional information needed

2.    Select or develop a model to accurately represent the data or information given in the problem (for example, a graph, chart, equation, formula, spreadsheet, pictorial representation, etc.).

3.    Solve the problem with or without technology to achieve correct mathematical results using correct units of measurement.

4.    Review results for reasonableness and/or multiple correct solutions.

5.    Discuss, explain, or demonstrate the use of the model for making inferences or drawing conclusions.

If you have numeracy samples of student work to use for Assessment of Student Learning . . .

  • Be sure the student's name is on the page(s) of math work.  We will remove the name and replace it with a number, so when the work is assessed, it will be completely anonymous.  However, for the results to be meaningful, we need to be able to categorize the samples of student work according to how many credits the student has completed at PC.

  • Call Kory Merkel at 5-7673.  We need to assess the completed work of an entire class of students.  I’ll make a copy of the complete, graded set of assignments.  Graded work is preferred, so that the correctness of the work can be easily seen by those evaluating it.  Evaluators are staff and faculty from all disciplines, and may not themselves know the correct solution to a specialized math problem.

  • Have a key to the assignment or the problem available.  The committee only assesses one problem from any given assignment, so we only need a key for one of the problems which use math.

If you need help of any kind, please don’t hesitate to call Kory Merkel at 285-7673, or stop by A-244.  She’d be happy to visit you in your office at your convenience to help tweak a potential numeracy assessment problem.
