Meeting Minutes

February 28, 2005

Present: Jill, Leonard, Betsy, Ann, David, Dennis, Brent, Ronnie, Wilbert

Processes that we use to evaluate if we are meeting objectives –

  • National Community College Benchmark Project is a report that benchmarks (compares) PC to other colleges similar to us. Ann has asked those people that reportedly received this, but it appears no one has used this report.
  • Sense a trend that we take time to do the surveys, but don’t follow through once the survey is done. NCCBP may become an institutional effectiveness tool if chancellor wants all colleges to participate.

If had to analyze evidence as we have it now there are only a few things that we actually do use. Need to highlight those processes that are institutionalized, then go to the newer ones and mention that we do have them and how we are starting to use them.

According to Betsy, 2D is the global planning portion of the chapter, 2C is the tools that we use to evaluate this planning, 2B is the resources, which go hand in hand with 2C, and 2A is what we do with everything, what department is using what tools. Need to talk about 2D and then go back to 2C.

Looking at effective systems they are mainly internal systems.

Annual department reports are compiled by the department chairs, then sent to the Dean of Instruction and she sends them to the president. The Dean uses these reports to make recommendations, improvements, changes, etc. Dean looks at it and decides how it fits into education and make sure those pieces fit together. Department chair gets information from their programs, classes, advisory communities, etc. Only a few of these reports actually include institutional effectiveness, but this should increase now that there is actually someone here to measure institutional effectiveness. We, as a campus, need to have a definition of institutional effectiveness.

One thing that is a change is that department chairs were not asked to use program measures until last year. Important to note that when we know we have a problem and we want to fix it, it does take quite a while to make that change, at least 2 years.

Next meeting we will deal with 2D.
