Rule #14
Commas and Dates

Rule: Use a comma between the day and the year when you write the date. Example: October 6, 1995

Writing Tip: Don't use a comma when you write the month and the year.

Example: October 1995

Writing Tip: Don't use a comma if the day comes first.

Example: 6 October 1995

Rule: Write a comma after the year and the day when they are in the sentence.

Example: They celebrated their anniversary on October 6, 1995, in Hawaii.

Writing Tip: Don't use commas if the day isn't given.

Example: They celebrated their anniversary in October 1995 in Hawaii.
