Rule #13 Commas and Direct Quotations |
Rule: Use a comma after speaker tags such as she said when they introduce a direct quotation.
Write the comma outside the quotation mark.
Example: She said, "I'm going to write an essay."
Use two commas to set off a quotation when the speaker tag interrupts the quotation. Write the first comma inside the quotation marks. Write the second comma outside the quotation marks.
Example: "I'm going,"she said, " to write an essay."
Use one comma in a direct quotation which is a statement and where the speaker tag comes last. Write the comma inside the quotation marks.
Example: "I'm going to write an essay," she said.
Writing Tip: When the quotation is a question or an exclamation, don't use a comma.
Examples: "Are you going to write an essay?" she asked.
"I got an A on my essay!" she yelled.
Writing Tip: Don't use a comma when the word that follows a speaker tag.
Example:
She said that "the essay was well written."
