Rule #12
The Comma and Math

 

Rule: Write commas when the number has four or more digits.

Start at the one's place and count three places to the left. Separate groups of three digits.

Example: 1,234,456 If there are only four digits in a number, you can omit the comma.

Example: 1546

 

Writing Tip: Don't write commas with numbers such as telephone numbers, 724-3458; zip codes, 85314; and years, 2001.

Rule: Write a comma to separate two parts of a measurement.

Example: two feet, two inches
