“My idea of education
is to unsettle the
minds of the young
and inflame their intellects.”
--Robert Maynard Hutchins

Classics isn’t about looking backward; it’s about finding yourself and your future, by learning about how
the past is alive in the present.

the classics

In the Classical Studies Program at Phoenix College you can get a small college, liberal arts education for a fraction of the price of a private school. You can be prepared to compete for a space at Yale or Stanford or Claremont- McKenna. You can make close connections with your classmates and instructors. You can enjoy these benefits:

1) SMALL CLASSES limited in size to less than 26.

2) Make FRIENDS in our learning community.

3) SOCIALIZE with classmates and your professors:

  • educational trips to New Orleans, Los Angeles, Boston, even other countries
  • parties and dinners with other students and guest speakers
  • extra-curricular seminars by professors and distinguished speakers from Maricopa county and Arizona

4) MENTORING program to help you succeed:

  • one to one faculty mentors will help you plan for your future education and career
  • student-faculty conferences to evaluate your progress and find ways to help you be the best you can be

5) GREAT BOOKS: Read original, great books, like Shakespeare’s plays, Cervantes’ Don Quixote, Dantes’ Inferno, and others. Learn to write, read, and discuss at an advanced level. You will see how American and modern culture has its roots in our Greco-Roman past.

6) INTER-DISCIPLINARY: Find art and music in your history class and make connections between the literature and the historical events of time periods you’re studying.

7) TRANSFER: Our best students transfer to the best colleges and universities in the country. We don’t expect our students to become classicists. This is a very general education which gives the basic grounding to succeed in any number of majors, from History, to English, to Business. Most of the required classes are necessary for any major.
