Mission Statement

The mission of the HELP Department is to provide programs that promote and inspire life-long learning, education and career goals, and self-development through support of personal responsibility and integration of mind, body and spirit.

**  In order to use the Fitness Center, you must be officially registered in a credit or non-credit Fitness Center or Weight  Training class.

 Course Objectives:   By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate proper use of exercise equipment and perform a basic weight lifting routine.

  2. Identify the components of fitness and design an effective personal exercise program using exercise basics.

  3. Apply various health and wellness principles to improve personal health status.

 

 

Grading Requirements for 2 Credits 

GRADE 2 CREDIT CLASSES 1 CREDIT CLASSES

A or P 90 points or more 45 points or more
B or P 80-89 points 40-44 points
C or P 70-79 points 35-39 points
D or Z 60-69 points 30-34 points
F or Z 59 points or less 29 points or less

Exercise Hours in the Fitness Center 2 points per hour 2 points per hour
Off-campus exercise 2 points per hour (max. of 10 points) 2 points per hour (max. of 5 points)
Wellness Lectures 2 points per lecture (max. of 16 points) 2 points per lecture (max. of 8 points)
Article Review 2 points per review article (max. 6 points) 2 points per article (max. of 4 points)
Personal Progress Log (PPL) 5 points for consistent exercise documentation 5 points for consistent exercise documentation

Descriptions of Point Values:

Exercise Hours in the Fitness Center: You can earn points when you exercise in the fitness center.  For every hour of exercise, you will receive 2 points.  All students are required to present a Phoenix College ID card to gain access to the Fitness Center
Off Campus Exercise: A maximum of 10 hours (or 20 points) can be earned with documentation of off campus exercise.  For example, hiking on the weekend, walking the dog, etc.
Wellness Lectures: Wellness lectures are worth 2 points each.   Please refer to the schedule for dates and times of lectures.  Various lectures are also available on the web at:
Smart Start Lectures:

Wellness lectures noted as Smart Start are special sessions that are designed to get you started on your personal exercise program. (max. of 8 points). http://www.pc.maricopa.edu/departments/help/wellness/

Article Review: Points can be obtained by completing article reviews.  A list of acceptable articles and specific format will be available in the fitness center.
Personal Progress Log (PPL): An extra 5 points can be earned at the end of the semester if your progress is documented consistently on your Personal Progress Log (PPL).
