Rule #4
Commas and Noun of Direct Address

Rule: Use a comma to separate a noun of direct address from the rest of the sentence.

A noun of direct address names the person who is receiving the information.

..........Example:     John, you should call your mother.

     The noun of direct address is John.


The noun can move in the sentence.

..........Examples:     You should, John, call your mother.

.....                           You should call your mother, John.......          ........        


*Writing Tip:

Do not confuse a noun of direct address with the subject of a sentence.

           Example:     Noun of direct address- Doctor, call the nurse.

       Subject - The doctor called the nurse.
