COMMAS

 

Rule #17
Commas and Titles

 

Rule: Use a comma to separate the title when it follows a name.

          Examples:           Martin Luther King, Jr.

                                      Jane Jones, MD.


 Writing Tip:  Don't write a comma if the title comes before the name. Usually you write a period.

            Example:          Dr. Jane Jones

Writing Tip: Don't use a comma to separate the title if the person prefers to write the name without commas.

 

Rule:Use two commas to set off the title if it stands for academic degrees or religious orders.

          Example:           Sarah Jones, Ph.D., wrote a book.
