Part 2: Fluoride Varnish Application

10. The child can have a drink of water immediately after the fluoride varnish is placed.

Fluoride varnish needs to be reapplied to maintain its caries-preventive effect. Various application schedules have been proposed, with the suggestion that it be applied at least every 2 - 3 months on the at-risk-for-caries child. This can easily be accomplished by non-dental healthcare providers at a child's frequent well-child care visits. Other application regimens include an intensive treatment protocol of 3 applications in 1 week every year (for 3 - 4 years).
