Part
2: Fluoride Varnish Application
Following is the application procedure (using Duraphat or Duraflor), provided by Dr. Peter Domoto of the University of Washington, Department of Pediatric Dentistry. It is ideal for providing a fluoride varnish treatment to a child in a setting where a dental chair is not available and can be performed easily by medical professionals in a clinic setting. Application time is between 1 - 4 minutes, depending on the number of teeth that are to be covered with varnish.
1. Give the child a toothbrush.
2. Position the child in the "knee to knee" posture and have the caretaker lower the child's head onto your lap.
3. Use the child's toothbrush and quickly brush the child's teeth.
4. Have all supplies ready to begin application after brushing the child's teeth. The parent/caregiver can act as your "assistant" and hold the dappen dish with the fluoride varnish, as pictured.
