Part 2: Fluoride Varnish Application
Fluoride varnishes are not intended to adhere permanently to a tooth, but to remain in close contact with enamel for several hours. Toothbrushing may be sufficient to clean the teeth before application and prophylaxis is not required.
To apply fluoride varnish, the following armamentarium is needed:
Mouth mirror (disposable mouth mirrors are commercially available)
2x2 gauze sponges
Infant size toothbrushAdditionally:
If Duraflor or Duraphat is used:
Disposable brush
Disposable dappen dish
Two (2) drops fluoride varnishIf CavityShield is used:
an individual pouch containing a brush and fluoride varnish
