This window typically occurs between 19 and 31 months of age, but some studies have shown that they can colonize before 12 months of age, coinciding with the eruption of the incisors. It becomes important to prevent the maternal transfer of this infectious bacteria to the child during this period.

These newly erupted teeth are vulnerable to rapid demineralization because:

these teeth are typically crowded, therefore they cannot be cleaned adequately

babies are typically mouthbreathers which leads to demineralization

the enamel has not had an opportunity to mature
