After building rapport with Betsy and her daughter, Jessie is still very reluctant to receive the oral exam, and not only starts crying, but will not leave her mother's lap.
The best way to handle this situation is the following:
wait until Jessie is at least 2-1/2 years old and will have an easier time separating from her mother - she'll have all of her primary teeth in at that time for the exam
ask the mother to leave the room so Jessie will be less distracted
allow Jessie to remain with her mother and examine Jessie with her mother holding her
