Part
1: Case Study
Sorry, that is incorrect - allowing Jessie to remain with her mother and examining her while her mother holds her is the best option.
A convenient method to employ to examine Jessie's oral cavity is the "knee-to-knee" position. This position is suited for dental professionals as well as non-dental pediatric health care professionals:
1. The practitioner and parent sit facing one another in chairs, with their knees touching.
2. The parent (or caregiver) slowly places their child in the cradle formed by their legs.
3. The child's head is placed gently in the lap of the practitioner.
4. The parent cuddles their child's legs under his/her arms and holds their child's arms and hands. The child is now well supported and stable, and the practitioner has good visibility and access to the child's oral cavity.
Jessie is now comfortable in her mother's lap and you can begin your oral examination. The armamentarium needed for this exam consists of an infant-sized toothbrush and a small mouth mirror (disposable mouth mirrors are available commercially). Both a dental clinician or a non-dental pediatric healthcare provider can easily carry out this procedure.
