Intra - Oral Manifestations
The intra-oral manifestations include:
- poor oral hygiene with extensive plaque and calculus - chronic alcoholics may neglect all other aspects of their lives to pursue their addiction
- high prevalence of decay
- generalized chronic advanced periodontal disease due to poor oral hygiene and lack of regular dental care
- decreased salivary flow
- leukoplakia
- candidiasis
- inflamed gingiva, loss of stipling, blunting of interdental papilla, deep pocketing, advancec bone loss
- heavily coated tongue
- general dental neglect
- redness of mucosa due to inflammation
- glossitis (inflammation of the tongue)
- xerostomia from decreased salivary flow
- glossodynia (painful tongue)
- bruxism and attrition
- erosion secondary to ethanol-induced emesis
