Intra - Oral Manifestations

The intra-oral manifestations include:

• poor oral hygiene with extensive plaque and calculus - chronic alcoholics may neglect all other aspects of their lives to pursue their addiction
• high prevalence of decay
• generalized chronic advanced periodontal disease due to poor oral hygiene and lack of regular dental care
• decreased salivary flow
• leukoplakia
• candidiasis
• inflamed gingiva, loss of stipling, blunting of interdental papilla, deep pocketing, advancec bone loss
• heavily coated tongue
• general dental neglect
• redness of mucosa due to inflammation
• glossitis (inflammation of the tongue)
• xerostomia from decreased salivary flow
• glossodynia (painful tongue)
• bruxism and attrition
• erosion secondary to ethanol-induced emesis
