Oral Presentation Assessment
Steering Committee; Fri., Sep. 10; Members present: Gerry Burgess, Geof Eroe, Laura Galloway, Linda Garcia, Ken Roberts Members excused: Queta Chavez After getting off to a slow start because Gerry couldn't locate the
TV/VCR, Laura graciously offered her alternative. It proved to be a really good place to view our tapes (although it was freezing in there at first) and it was decided to hold the rest of our meeting this semester in H112. We finished rating 3 presentations left over from last year: all from BIO105, 0337. Environmental Biology, taped Fall 2003. We have a combined 24 presentations left from five different classes from Fall '03 to rate, so I'll be getting out a call for more oral presentations that we can begin rating later on in the semester. I will be attending the New Faculty Orientation tomorrow (Tues., Sep. 14) to explain how easy it is assign an oral presentation so, hopefully, we'll get a few nibbles from the new folk! Our next meeting will be Friday, Sep. 24; 8 a.m.; H112. See you then!
Oral Presentation Assessment Steering Committee; Fri., Oct. 22; 8:00 a.m., H112 Members present: Gerry Burgess, Geof Eroe, Laura Galloway, Linda Garcia, Ken Roberts Member excused: Queta Chavez It was great to get back to rating some oral presentations! The first order of business, however, was having the committee sign the Committee Blueprint (Queta, I'll get it over to you for your signature) so that we can turn it in to the Student Academic Achievement Assessment Committee by Nov. 1. We rated two presentations from LAS 212 , #2267 "Insurance and Tort Law" taped in Oct., 2003. These presentations prompted a good amount of discussion because they were long (running well over 10 minutes apiece) and the students didn't seem to follow the guidelines for the assignment as laid out by the instructor. Part of our discussion was about the kind of feedback the committee can give to the instructor for future oral presentation assignments. Our next meeting will be Friday, Nov. 5; 8 a.m.; H112. We'll finish the LAS 212 presetations and move on to a new tape. Gerry
Oral Presentation Assessment Steering Committee; Fri., Nov. 5; 8:00 a.m., H112. Members present: Gerry Burgess, Queta Chavez, Geof Eroe, Laura Galloway, Linda Garcia Member excused: Ken Roberts We rated 3 rather lengthy presentations today: two from LAS 212,
2267, Insurance and Tort Law (which completed that particular tape) Our next meeting will be Friday, Nov. 19; 8 a.m.; H112. See you then. Gerry
Oral Presentaion Assessment Steering Committee; Fri., Nov. 19, 2004; 8:00 a.m., H112 Members present: Gerry Burgess, Geof Eroe, Linda Garcia, Ken Roberts Members excused: Queta Chavez, Laura Galloway Most of the meeting was taken up with Gerry reporting on the Assessment Committee meeting of Thursday, Nov. 18. Each of the individual Assessment Committees' chairs reported on the progress of each committee and there was a discussion about where we go from here with an emphasis on "closing the loop." Brent Jameson suggested that the Oral Presentation Assessment Committee not solicit any more tapes of oral presentation assignments until we have finished with our present backlog. Our committee then began to discuss how we can more quickly and effectively get feedback to faculty members who have submitted tapes of oral presentations. Afterwards, we only had time to rate one more presentation from HCR 230, 1977, Culture and Health, taped Fall 2003.
Oral Presentation Assessment Steering Committee; Fri., Dec. 3, 2004; 8:00 a.m.; H112. Members present: Gerry Burgess, Queta Chavez, Laura Galloway, Linda Garcia, Ken Roberts Members excused: Geof Eroe We finished up rating the two remaining presentations from HCR 230, 1977, Culture and Health, taped Fall 2003. This concludes our work for Fall 2004. We will begin Spring 2005 with presentations from three remaining classes from Fall 2003 and two classes from Fall 2004. To date we have rated 155 oral presentations representing 28 different classes over six semesters with a rating average of 5.649 ( a rating of 5 or above representing an acceptable oral presentation score). Our meetings for this Spring, 2005 will continue to be on Fridays at 8 a.m. in classroom H 112 ( I believe that Dusty Goltz has a COM 230 class in this room at 9 on Fridays) on the following dates: Jan. 28, Feb. 4 & 18, March 4 & 25, April 8 & 22, and May 6. Please make note of these dates and let me know asap if there are any major problems with these dates. Thanks,
Oral Presentation Assessment Steering Committee; Fri., Jan. 28, 2005; 8:00 a.m., H112 Members present: Gerry Burgess, Laura Galloway, Linda Garcia, Ken Roberts Members excused: Geof Eroe, Queta Chavez The members of the committee helped "prep" Gerry for his presentation later in the day at the District Assessment Forum. Gerry is reporting on "The Oral Assessment Process at PC. Laura, Linda, and Ken were extremely helpful in suggesting points that needed to be covered, especially in the area of the committee "closing the loop" on the oral assessment process. This discussion effectively took up all of the meeting. Gerry cancelled the meeting scheduled for Friday, Feb. 4 due to scheduling conflicts. The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 18, 2005; 8:00 a.m., H112. Gerry will report on the District Assessment Forum and then we will assess some presentations. Thanks,
Oral Presentation Assessment Steering Committee; Fri. February 18; 8:00 am, H-112. Members present: Gerry Burgess, Geof Eroe, Linda Garcia. Members excused: Queta Chavez, Laura Galloway, Ken Roberts. Linda, Geof, and I started assessing group presentations from Karen Christen's DHE 127: Prevention of Dental Disease class. The assignment was for the students to share articles from dental journals in six-person groups. We were able to assess three of the six presenters and will finish with the other three at our March 4 meeting. I think that it's a tribute to our assessment rubric that it's both adaptable to such presentations and still viable in its results even with only three assessors. Gerry

127: prevention of Dental Disease class. PLEASE NOTE, COMMITTEE MEMBERS! THE NEXT MEETING OF THE ORAL PRESENTATION
