Oral Presentation Assessment Steering Committee; Wed., September 10, 2003; 1:00 p.m., H221. Members present: Gerry Burgess, Queta Chavez, Laura Galloway, Liz O'Brien, Ken Roberts We rated 4 more presentations today, two from MAT151 and two from HUM/THE205. Comittee chair sent to campus assessment chair Brent Jameson a summary report. I've attached it here: The Oral Presentation Assessment Committee has rated 92 student presentations from a variety of academic and occupational courses (Math, Philosophy, Film, Health Care, Interior Design, CIS, Dental, English, Business, Management, Humanities, Web Design and Legal Studies). Our rubric looks at 8 competencies. A student is considered as "satisfactory" if he or she scores a minimum of 5 on the 8-point scale. The average score of the 92 presentations is 5.53, with 64 of the 92 students (70%) scoring 5 or better. In our attempts to "close the feedback loop" and help create
a "culture" of oral presentation instruction on campus,
the committee has designed a document, "Assigning an Oral Presentation:
the whys and hows for faculty." This document, along with a "How
To" document designed for students, is available on the campus
assessment website The committee itself is in good "health." Along with new
members, we still have five original members serving. The committee
is beginning to explore secondary measures and future directions to
take. Oral Presentation Assessment Steering Committee; Wed., October 8, 2003; 1:15 p.m., H221.
