Oral Presentation Assessment Committee Minutes 2003-2004

Oral Presentation Assessment Steering Committee; Wed., September 10, 2003; 1:00 p.m., H221.

Members present: Gerry Burgess, Queta Chavez, Laura Galloway, Liz O'Brien, Ken Roberts

We rated 4 more presentations today, two from MAT151 and two from HUM/THE205.

Comittee chair sent to campus assessment chair Brent Jameson a summary report. I've attached it here:

The Oral Presentation Assessment Committee has rated 92 student presentations from a variety of academic and occupational courses (Math, Philosophy, Film, Health Care, Interior Design, CIS, Dental, English, Business, Management, Humanities, Web Design and Legal Studies). Our rubric looks at 8 competencies. A student is considered as "satisfactory" if he or she scores a minimum of 5 on the 8-point scale. The average score of the 92 presentations is 5.53, with 64 of the 92 students (70%) scoring 5 or better.

In our attempts to "close the feedback loop" and help create a "culture" of oral presentation instruction on campus, the committee has designed a document, "Assigning an Oral Presentation: the whys and hows for faculty." This document, along with a "How To" document designed for students, is available on the campus assessment website
(http://www.pc.maricopa.edu/departments/Administration/IAP/assessment/assessment.html) or at any time from any member on the committee.

The committee itself is in good "health." Along with new members, we still have five original members serving. The committee is beginning to explore secondary measures and future directions to take.

The chair updated the committee on all the goings-on over the last few
weeks:
- The paragraphs written for the campus assessment report.
- The Best Practices report written for the Governing Board.
- The document created summarizing all participating instructors and
student rating scores. We decided that this document would remain
internal to the committee at this point. The chair will share it with the Campus
Steering Committee at their next meeting. (See attachment)

We first discussed the logistics of our meetings this semester. We
agreed that because we have so many tapes to rate, that if 6 or more
people attended a meeting, we would break into two groups to maximize
our rating process. We agree that a minimum of 3 raters is necessary for
a fair rating.

We rated 2 more presentations today, both from MGT253, Owning and
Operating a Small Business.

The chair shared assessment information learned at the District Assessment Forum on January 30. Glendale CC made a presentation re: their Oral Assessment practices. Though quite different from ours, we felt that we were getting similar data.

We agreed that in our "pre-packet" sent to instructors when they "offer" their class for assessment, we would include a) the assignment explanation form for the faculty member to fill out, b) a hard copy of the student form and c) a hard copy of the "Hows and Whys for Faculty" form.

We rated 3 more presentations today, two from MGT253, Owning and
Operating a Small Business (completing that tape) and 1 from HCE226, Administrative Practices.

O'Brien reported on the Assessment Steering Committee meeting held earlier this week. She also reported on her meeting with Emily Lander from the Institutional Assessment Office. Emily will be compiling our current statistical data over the summer. We are at the point where we want to know if the data can tell us anything important or relevant. Emily's office will take our current sample total (130 as of today) and break it down into the following categories.
• Male/Female breakdown
• Age bracket breakdown
• Credits taken at PC per speaker prior to taped presentation
• Taken COM100, 225 or 259 prior to taped presentation?
• Occupational or Academic course
• Repeated participating faculty - have their class averages increased,
decreased or remained the same per participating semester

We rated 6 presentations today: all from AJS215, Criminalistics: Physical Evidence (completing that tape).
