Oral Presentation Assessment Committee Minutes 2002-2003

Oral Presentation Assessment Steering Committee; Wed., September 11, 2002; 8:30 a.m., H221.

Members present: Gerry Burgess, Queta Chavez, Edlyn Durr, Linda Garcia,
Liz O'Brien, Margaret Souders

Member excused: Ken Roberts

• Welcome and brief orientation to returning member Queta Chavez and new
member Edlyn Durr. It's so helpful to have fresh perspectives.

• We spent the majority of the meeting reflecting on overall goals for
the semester. We are ready to move in the following directions:

- Create a handout "Why Assign an Oral Presentation?" This handout
can help
instructors see the benefits of assigning an oral presentation and
will also help
counter some resistance some may have in assigning them.

- Create a handout on "Tips for Assigning an Oral Presentation."
This handout can
help instructors assign an oral presentation that can result in
effective teaching and
learning.

- Create a "feedback loop" system.
1) a feedback form for instructors whose tapes we have received.

2) a feedback form to send instructors once their students have
been rated.
3) a feedback communique (via hard copy and/or e-mail?) to the
campus to
increase awareness on the results so far and to encourage
additional
participation in the on-going assessment project.

• Lastly, we rated one presentation while training Queta and Edlyn in
rating techniques. We will continue their training at the next meeting
on Sept. 25.

Oral Presentation Assessment Steering Committee; Wed., September 25, 2002; 8:30 a.m., H221.

Members present: Gerry Burgess, Queta Chavez, Edlyn Durr, Linda Garcia,
Liz O'Brien, Ken Roberts

Member excused: Margaret Souders

• We reviewed and edited the drafts of our "Faculty Feedback" form and
our "Assigning an Oral Presentation" document. Changes will be made and
we will look at the documents again next time.

• We will send out the above "Assigning an OP" document to faculty in
the next month but will also explain that we won't need more
participating faculty until Spring.

• We felt that we have enough tapes at this time and don't want to get
too backlogged. Additionally, we agreed to not rate more than about 7
presentations from any one class. This will help will help to ensure a
more random sampling and help to keep us sane.

• We rated two more presentations from Gail Korkames' CIS105 class.

Next meeting - Wednesday, October 9

- We talked about some questions that we would have for the
"consultants" coming to the Assessment Forum at the District on Nov. 1.

- We continued to edit our "Assigning an Oral Presentatin" document that
we plan to hand out to the whole campus.

- We rated four more presentations.

Members present: Gerry Burgess, Queta Chavez, Edlyn Durr, Liz O'Brien, Margaret Souders

Members excused: Linda Garcia, Ken Roberts

1) We discussed the document we sent out to the campus. We haven't received much feedback, but the feedback we did get was positive.

2) Liz summed up the Assessment Forum from last Friday down at District with the NCA/HLC Consultant Evaluators. Reviewed were some pertinent discussion questions:
a) Have the CE's thoroughly read the docs prior to their visit? Yes.
b) How often have you seen that institutions are actually able to "close the assessment loop" with regard to improvements in curriculum and instruction? Rarely, but there are some cases. This is seen mostly in occupational programs. Gen Eds are a bit fuzzier to work with. (We think that our latest document is a big step toward closing that loop.)
c) Are we assessing who are students are (luck of the draw) or what we are teaching them? Hard to answer this. It's a "soft" issue. Best approach is to encourage all faculty to see assessment skills as a priority and to have them encourage it in as many courses as possible. The aim is to create a culture of assessment.
d) Where's the proof that assessment really results in increased student learning? Hard to answer this. We used to have no evidence, at least assessment allows us to begin a culture of collecting evidence. Business and industry and many occupational accrediting bodies have been requiring assessment for years. Education should too. Those that finance us (legislators) can use assessment as a "stick".

3) We rated 4 more presentations from an Interior Design class.

We rated three more Interior Design presentations this morning. We tried
to rate some English 102 presentations, but found them impossible to
rate as they did not meet the assessment criteria.

1) We spent some time preparing for the upcoming Assessment Day.

2) We also began to explore some potential secondary measures. Ideas
included 1) tracking any COM course students took prior to or after the
class in which they were taped and 2) offering some tuition credits to
students who would agree to be tracked during their years at PC. These
were just ideas and the details were not discussed.
