October 2003

The Occupational Student Academic Achievement Outcomes Committee in 2000-01 worked on the education of more than 30 Program Directors as well as the development of individual program matrixes to measure the first outcome statement which is:  Occupational programs at Phoenix College will prepare students for the workforce.  The committee is a diverse one with program representation from business and health, to drafting and dental assisting.  Directors of over 50 occupational programs are at different levels of understanding of assessment.  Those members more familiar with the process helped educate those not as familiar.

The group initially worked on educating themselves and each other about measurable outcomes and assessment activities at Phoenix College. Some members of the group had an understanding of outcomes unique to all occupational programs.  In contrast, other members were familiar with thinking inside the parameters of their programs and had a difficult time understanding assessment activities across disciplines.  After individuals started sharing activities utilized to assess students, both direct and indirect, they felt more comfortable with measuring the first outcome statement.  An assessment matrix resulted from the group that would measure this outcome statement.

The committee, (which consists of all Directors of Occupational Programs on campus) met at least once a month with different individuals attending the various meetings.  In September of 200, a steering committee was formed to guide and direct the future of the group with representation from various occupational programs on campus.  The future direction and scope of the committee includes; all programs completing their matrixes and submitting them to the chair by December and formation of a second outcome statement in the Spring of 2001.
