Information Literacy Assessment
Committee
Notes from October 13, 2003
Meeting
2:00pm in L-129
Present:
Ann Roselle (Chair), Linn Dowd, Michelle Dyer-Hurdon, Linda
Offenberg, Elizabeth Saliba
Importance
of Committee
Committee
discussed how the world of information is too complex and
changes too rapidly for Phoenix College to focus only on student
learning of discipline content. Together, the campus
needs to work on developing information literate students.
Information Literacy Learning
The committee
brainstormed on how and where information literacy learning
takes place:
-
Specific courses/classroom
assignments – ACC230, AST, BIO105, CIS105, COM, CPD150,
ENG101, ENG102, ENG108, ESL103, MGT253, MKT109, PSY290,
RDG
-
Library – Reference desk and
during library instructional sessions.
-
One-on-one faculty/student
interactions
-
Online environment – Librarians
Online, WebCT courses
-
Computer labs
-
Peers
-
Personal problem solving -
Learning through experience, which may also take place off-campus
Education
in information literacy is shared by many.
Results of Assessment
& Closing the Loop
The committee
agreed that the assessment results, which should help identify
those information literacy areas that need strengthening,
must be ongoing and used to improve student learning.
In “closing the loop,” the committee could provide instructions
for planning and designing information literacy assignments,
along with sample assignments. The committee could also
recommend ways in which to integrate information literacy
more fully into the curriculum.
ACRL Information Literacy Standards
The committee
reviewed the Association of College & Research Libraries
(ACRL) Information
Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education.
Ann, Michelle, and Elizabeth will rework the 5 standards/outcomes
to make them more succinct and applicable to Phoenix College.
The adaptation
by the MCCCD Library Instructional Council can be referred
to when rewriting.
The rewrites will be shared with all committee members before
the next meeting. It was also recommended that a brochure
be created with the rewritten standards to be distributed
to faculty.
Next meeting: November 10, 2003 at 1:35pm in the small
administration conference room.
