ESL Grammar and Writing Assessment Committee

Phoenix College General Goals for ESL Grammar and Writing

OUTCOMES STATEMENT FOR ESL 010 (LEVEL 1 GRAMMAR)
Upon completion of ESL 010, Phoenix College students will be able to write simple grammatically correct sentences in the present, present continuous, and simple past tense, which incorporate the verb to be and other verbs, and to use imperative, interrogative, and affirmative and negative sentence forms.

 

OUTCOMES STATEMENT FOR ESL 020 (LEVEL 2 GRAMMAR)
Upon completion of ESL 020, Phoenix College students will be able to identify correct grammar and sentence structure and construct sentences using all of the competencies of ESL 020.  In addition, they will be able to write an understandable short paragraph, based on a model, centered on a main idea.

 

OUTCOMES STATEMENT FOR ESL 030 (LEVEL 3 GRAMMAR)
Upon completion of ESL 030, Phoenix College students will be able to construct sentences using the competencies of levels 1, 2, and 3 grammar.  In addition, they will be able to write a simple paragraph centered on a main idea, using correct format.  This will include correct mechanics and simple, compound, and complex sentences.

 

OUTCOMES STATEMENT FOR ESL 040 (LEVEL 4 GRAMMAR)
Upon completion of ESL 040, Phoenix College students will be able to construct sentences using the competencies of levels 1,2,3, and 4 grammar.  In addition, they will be able to write a composition in any given mode that has a title and an introduction with a main idea.  The composition will also contain support, correct mechanics, organization and unity, and simple, compound and complex sentences.
