ESL Grammar and Writing Assessment Committee

Results Summaries from ESL 020 and 030 Testing, Spring 03

BRIEF SUMMARY
1.  020   In general, we had 25% (or higher) wrong answers regarding:

     word order  (29.17%)

     word choice (25.83%)

     spelling        (36.67%)

This indicates that 1/4 of ESL students tested have problems with these areas; thus, we should consider focusing more time, more

varied teaching methods and perhaps new teaching methods for these topics.

2.  030  In general, we had 24% or higher wrong answers in the following:

    complex sentences        (24.17%)

     punctuation                   (28.33%)

     subject-verb agreement (44.17%)

Again, more time and varied methods (perhaps more oral practice) could play a part in improvement, BUT I would like to hear from you.  What has worked for you?  What methods, materials, crazy ideas could make the instruction better?
