ESL Grammar and Writing Assessment Committee

Phoenix College ESL Assessment Committee

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR 020 AND 030, LEVELS 2 AND 3 GRAMMAR

APRIL 2003

General

While much committee discussion has occurred and needs to continue, the ESL Assessment Committee has some suggestions for improvement of these grammar courses.  It is important to note that some of the recommendations should occur prior to the student starting a course; that is, proper placement and preparation could alleviate a student’s struggling performance. Committee members will research “reality” content infusion and more information regarding the length of time needed for second language acquisition.

Recommendations for 020 and 030

1.  Review previous semester’s grammar at the beginning of each semester

2. Be sure to have a diagnostic in the first week of class

3.  Instructors, students, and staff need to have an understanding that language acquisition

takes time, and students should be encouraged to spend more time studying.

4.  Students need to be encouraged to use the tutors, learning circles, and instructors’

office hours for better understanding of course material.

5.  Courses should also incorporate real writing, not simply filling in the blanks.

6.  Students should be encouraged to read more.

7.  Instructors should allow for more “reality” reading and writing (i.e. “News for You”

     type content)

8.  Instructors should vary examples and the medium of delivery

9.  Instructors should use clear models for instruction (i.e. overheads, PowerPoint, clear

     writing on the board)

10. Instructors should incorporate an integrated approach. The committee is considering

adding 022, 032, 042 (writing and oral practice type classes) into the PC course

    offerings.
