ESL Grammar and Writing Assessment Committee

Phoenix College ESL Assessment Committee Report for September, 2003

Submitted by Pamela Rogers, Committee Chair

The 2002-2003 academic year was spent focusing on level four grammar/composition courses (ESL 040) and on researching possible listening and speaking evaluative tools.  Writing samples were collected at the beginning and the end of the semester for ESL 040 courses, and results indicate a modest overall increase in writing organization and mechanics (+ 23  %) in this pilot research.  Another round of the 040 testing is occurring in the fall of 2003.  Further, the committee has determined that 040 as well as 030 and 020 (levels three and two grammar) should be pre and post tested, and this pre testing is currently underway. In addition to the grammar and writing classes,  and after collecting a student needs survey regarding listening and speaking, the committee has decided to become trained in a nationally recognized method, the OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview), to better equip ourselves and other faculty and staff in evaluating the ESL students speaking skills.
