ESL Grammar and Writing Assessment Committee Phoenix College ESL Assessment Report, Fall 2003 Dear ESL Faculty Member, For the past four and a half years, the ESL Program at PC has been involved in the creation and implementation of goals and an evaluation methodology for our classes. A committee was formed so that we could participate in the campus wide ongoing assessment process, and to date, we are the only Maricopa Community College ESL Program to be part of such a comprehensive project. It is important to note that our program and our findings will be part of the HLC/NCA Accreditation Self Study that PC is currently preparing for. Our hardworking committee, which has been commended by the PC Assessment Steering Committee and PC administrators, meets at least monthly, and each of you is welcome, but not required, to participate. This report is being provided to all ESL faculty with the sole purpose of course and instruction improvement. At this point, the committee has developed the following materials (provided to you in this report) to assist in the evaluation process:
The assessment process currently consists of pre and post testing for level 020 and 030 grammar and paragraph writing (pre and post) for 040. The 040 evaluation was piloted in the spring, and results of the fall pre and post testing will be available to you at the beginning of 2004. In addition, the 040 students each have a portfolio so that we may follow their progress. The committee is learning more and more about our students each day, and it welcomes your input and questions. After all, we are all here to help our wonderful students. Please take some time to review the enclosed materials, and dont hesitate to contact one of us if you have questions or concerns. Thank you for your commitment to the PC ESL students!
