ESL Grammar and Writing Assessment Committee PAMELA K.ROGERS, CHAIR OVERVIEW Two levels of ESL have been analyzed: Levels I and II grammar. Last year these courses were titled ENG 009 and ENG 010 respectively; however, the MCCCD has since changed both the prefixes and the numbers. ENG009 is now called ESL010 and ENG 010 is now called ESL 020. Please note that last years results will have last years prefixes/numbers and any work for the 2001-2002 school year will use the new prefixes and numbers.
II. During the fall of 2000, a test was designed to assess the 009 rubric. A pilot of this test was administered to three classes (approximately 70 students) in December of 2000. We selected December so that the student could be given an entire semester to learn the material on the rubric. Tests were evaluated by a group of faculty/staff other than ESL Assessment Committee members, thus providing cooperation and campus wide collaboration. Food and drinks were served at both the training for evaluation and the evaluation day. Approximately 20 committee members and evaluators attended. Debriefing and troubleshooting occurred directly after the evaluation session. Data was compiled regarding the 009 test. III. In Spring of 2001 the committee reviewed the 009 results, made changes to the testing tool and again tested 3 classes in May. The same basic procedures were used for the evaluation. (See attached results). Also during this semester, the committee developed an Outcomes Statement, rubric, and test tool for level II grammar, ENG010. This was pilot tested with the same methodology as the 009 pilot and follow up tests. Again, a review was conducted and revisions made so that we can run another test in ESL Assessment 2000-2001, page 2 December of 2001. We are also going to test two night sections of this level II class. IV. Fall 2001. On August 29th the committee met to discuss the pilot results and future test of ENG010 (now called ESL020, level II grammar). The committee also began to discuss testing level III grammar (ESL030). In addition, discussion was held regarding how to utilize test results to help teachers and students in these classes.
