Assessment Committee Minutes
Date: October 28, 1999

Present: Marsha Hopkins, Georgia Gudykunst, Jan Eygendaal, Judy Haberman, Marian Gibney, Edlyn Soderman, Marian Tadano, Billie Hughes, Bill Coppola, Yi Qin.

Marsah Hopkins chaired the meeting for Brent Jameson.
Information items:
Marian Tadano distributed information on the April 1-4, 2000 meeting of NCA in Chicago. She encouraged members of the committee to consider going. She also mentioned the Assessment Forum of AAHE in June. The assessment budget can support faculty travel to these meetings. Contact Marian Tadano if you are interested.
Documenting our work:
Billie will be working to document on the web the work we are doing. She will pull together historical documents. Members of the committee will need to be providing information to her on the current work being done in assessment. The following lists areas and roles:

· Learner outcomes-Dave Gorman and Betsy Frank as chairs of the numeracy and writing committee will need to provide copies of the outcomes and assessment instrument as they are developed.
· Structure and participation-Brent Jameson will provide this
· Meetings and events-the chair of each committee (ESL, Writing, Numeracy, and Assessment) need to provide a list of meeting dates. This includes all meeting dates for this year. This will document for future report writing the meeting schedules of our different committees.)
· Minutes of meetings-recorders of each of the committees need to provide copies of the committee meetings to Billie
· Newsletters-We need someone to head this up. Marian Gibney is willing to work with someone else on this project. We need to have one newsletter out per semester.
· Cycles of Assessment-Georgia Gudykunst. This will include timelines.
· Documents-any committee developing documents need to provide copies
· Program evaluation-Brent Jameson
· Institutional effectiveness-Georgia Gudykunst
Focusing committee work
Marian Gibney suggested we look at the Cross and Angelo Teaching Goals Inventory as a tool for helping us focus the development of student outcomes. Marian Tadano indicated that she has asked Judy Boschult to investigate the possibility of bring in Tom Angelo to work with classroom assessment techniques.
Outcomes and processes for the Cindy Lynch workshop

* Marian Gibney to provide a copy of the Teaching Goals Inventory to Marian Tadano who will provide copies and suggestions to the writing and numeracy committees.
* Marian Tadano is contacting Cindy Lynch regarding working the Teaching Goals inventory into our outcome development process.
* Numeracy and writing committees will hopefully be able to meet once before the Cindy Lynch workshop to explore outcomes and discuss the basic skill levels.
* At the beginning of the workshop, we will review our processes and discuss our direction and goals.
* After the overview, we will break into subgroups (numeracy and writing) to develop first level outcomes

The goal is to have one or two outcomes per area at the basic level (100 level) at the end of the workshop.

Marian will be meeting with the chairs of numeracy and writing to discuss the process for developing outcomes.
Assessment Clearinghouse

Brent Jameson will be working with the library to create a collection of assessment resources.
Presentation to PCPC

Georgia Gudykunst and Judy Boschult will be presenting to PCPC the same presentation they did at the board meeting. Assessment is an important part of planning process and PCPC needs so understand how our assessment processes fit into the college planning efforts.
