Committee Minutes
Date: April 13, 2000
Attendance: Brent Jameson, Judy Boschult, Kristen Anderson, David
Gorman, Georgia Gudykunst, Yi Qin, Edlyn Soderman, Betsy Frank, Bill
Coppola, Marian Tadano.
NCA Meeting Debriefing.
Brent, Marian, Betsy, Georgia and Bill gave updates on NCA. Major
themes from NCA included: assessment is a means to focus on and improve
teaching and learning, there are "levels of implementation"
of
assessment (Cecilia Lopez), and focus is on improvement, not on
extensive data/measures per se. Our PC reps to NCA commented that
PC
is fortunate to have faculty who are willing and able to get involved
in college wide assessment; a number of colleges are struggling to
get
faculty involvement.
District Student Academic Achievement Assessment Committee.
Brent Jameson and Georgia Gudykunst reported on the April meeting.
Most
of our Maricopa colleges hold an assessment week in spring and identify
cohorts with 30+ credit hr. at their institution. These people then
participate
in selected outcomes assessments. Several colleges reportedvery limited
student participation in their assessment week. One college is
considering the idea of requiring students to participate. Student
participation is an important issue for all 10 colleges.
Writing Committee.
Betsy Frank reported that writing samples are being obtained. She
has
asked John Hardaway, Camilla Westenberg and Pam Rogers to serve as
resource persons for the rating of the writing artifacts. Betsy also
reported that the ESL Committee has identified ENG107 as the course
level the ESL committee is almost done with the first level of the
rubric.
Numeracy Committee.
Dave Gorman is identifying several math faculty to serve as resources
for the rating of the numeracy artifacts. Dave plans to get together
with the raters before the April 28 rating session.
Rating Sessions: April 28, Friday, Rooms A 214 (Writing) and A 200
(Numeracy).
Occupational Committee.
Kristen Anderson reported that this committee is looking at various
employability
indictors of skills, such as exit, licensure, etc. They are also
discussing computer technology skills as a possibility. The committee
will meet
again next week.
Proposed Outcomes for 2000-02.
The Steering Team and the General Assessment Committee discussed and
agreed upon 2 new outcomes for this coming school year: reading and
oral communications. Further discussion of team building, which is
an important
area to a number of occupational area faculty, was proposed. Interest
was
expressed in conducting more workshops for the coming year. Critical
thinking
has been identified by many PC faculty as an important topic for the
workshop.
Next Meeting: April 27, 3 pm, Room 200.
