Assessment Committee Minutes
Date: September 8, 1997

Virtual Meeting--Minutes

The committee has decided that this first meeting will be a virtual meeting, because of schedule conflicts and beginning of the semester time crunch. The minutes of our last meeting (May 12, 1997) are below. They are also on the assessment web page.

The following minutes are organized according to the agenda issue and then comments and suggestions made by committee members.

Issue

1. Assessment newsletter-we agreed that there will be an assessment newsletter for Fall 1997. The following topics have been suggested for inclusion in that issue:

Program Evaluation at bat, on deck
Results of checksheets
Assessment success from departments

Please suggest other items, I am hoping to have a draft by the October meeting.

Committee member comments :Include results of college-wide strategic planning process that occurred last semester.

Issue:

2. August "impromptu" meeting-We were to meet with Cecelia Lopez from NCA, but schedules got confused. The result was that we were able to have a good brainstorming session. Much of the session focused on the difficulty with general education assessment. We were also able to discuss some of the ideas for assessment of Math classes. I know we talked about a lot of things that morning. Feel free to add to this list if you recall something that I missed.

Committee member comments:

At the August meeting it was suggested that perhaps some faculty who have already been through program review may want to act in a similar manner to the LATA's in the Technology area to help others go through the process.

Issue:

3. Dean Marian Tadano wants the committee to be aware of the following issue. At this point it is a bit vague, but will most likely become VERY important to us. Your thoughts-or have you heard anything else from anywhere?

It has been announced by Dr. delos Santos that the Board will be expecting a report on assessment from the colleges. The undecided issues are:

-what format, they wish

-one report from all the campuses or one report from each campus

The D.I.'s most likely will be addressing this issue through the coming year so this committee may want to forward our ideas to them.

Issue:

4. This year we planned to address the following issues:

Critical thinking assessment-any ideas of how we are going to do this?
Feedback loop for general education assessment. We do have data back from English and Reading assessments from last spring. This seems to be working well, both instructors and students say the checksheets are easy to do and helpful to them.
Math assessment-need lots of ideas here.

Committee member comments:

Have we decided who will be assess in the area of math and critical thinking?

The math department met on 9/8/97 to discuss assessment ideas. Dave Gorman will advise the committee of what is happening. If anyone has suggestions for the math assessment please send them to Dave.

Other comments/questions:

There was a question about which web page we discussed. There are so many, but at this point, the PC assessment committee information is found through the Research Department page, which can be accessed through the PC page.
