Steering Team Minutes
Date: November 13, 2000
Attendance: Brent Jameson, Chairperson; Judy Boschult, Kristin Anderson,
Maria Enciso, Betsy Frank, Kory Merkel, Georgia Gudykunst.
Writing Committee.
Betsy Frank reported that she has received two sets of writing samples
so far, with a total of 6 sets promised. There was some discussion
on contacting various programs that would expect writing from their
students, including the Honors Program and Liberal Arts. Kory Merkel
volunteered to contact Alan Haffa and Betsy Frank will contact Albert
Celoza.
Numeracy Committee.
Kory Merkel has received two sets of numeracy samples so far. Encourage
your colleagues to submit numeracy samples.
Committees Meeting on Assessment Day.
Four committees will meet and work on December 1: Numeracy, Writing,
Oral Communications and Team Building. The Occupational Committee
will participate as raters, as will the liaisons/department chairs.
Some of the ESL Committee members will also be participating that
day. The plan is to start with lunch from 11:30, have an overview
for the entire group at 1:00 pm and then break into the respective
assessment committees by 1:15 pm or so. After each committee finishes
its ratings of student work samples, they will debrief the process,
the logistics, and so forth.
Each committee chair will capture notes from the debriefing.
Liaison Role.
We need to clarify the role of the liaisons. Their general role is
to serve the communication link between the assessment committee and
the department faculty, and encourage colleagues to participate in
assessment activities and in providing student work samples. They
also have specific tasks such as having their department faculty complete
the matrix of skills taught and sharing the NCA Levels matrix with
their departments this year.
Draft of Progress Report to the Governing Board.
The General Assessment Committee has been sent a draft of the progress
report for the Governing Board to review. Comments and suggestions
can be sent to Brent Jameson, Georgia Gudykunst or any member of the
Steering Team.
The Steering Team noted that assessment of learning is not included
in our college mission statement. We need to get that incorporated
in our mission statement over time, as well as in other key documents
such as the course schedule.
Next Meeting: Nov. 20, 1 pm, in the Dental Conference Room.
Respectfully submitted,
Georgia Gudykunst
