Steering Team Minutes
Date: December 11, 2000

Attendance: Brent Jameson, Chairperson; Judy Boschult, Kristin Anderson, Maria Enciso, Betsy Frank, Georgia Gudykunst, Kory Merkel.

Role of Liaisons/Assessment:
The question was raised about liaisons possibly having a committee assignment for the General Assessment Committee. Marian T. will speak with the Senate President about committees, equity of time for assignments (e.g., committees that meet 1X week). While most departments have had some participation in assessment, several have had no participation at all in assessment this semester. We need some follow-up to encourage these departments.

Staff Development:
Judy Boschult has worked with Jim Walters to develop a tentative training schedule for Staff Development as follows: February: 1st week, numeracy; 3rd week: writing; March: team building, oral communication; April: TBD. The proposed training would include: providing the rubric for the outcome area, explaining it, and assisting faculty to align a class assignment to the rubric, etc. The Team was very supportive of this plan.

Diversity Workshop FYI:
PC will sponsor a diversity workshop on Feb. 22 in the afternoon. This is part of the Title V diversity effort. It is timed to complement the district diversity workshop, so that training fees could be kept low.

Assessment Day:
There has been some question raised by several colleges through the District Student Academic Assessment Committee about a possible district-mandated assessment day. Most of the college representatives favored a campus-based approach. The Deans of Instruction as a group are in favor of the campus being in control of campus assessment activities, rather than a district mandated assessment day.

There also was some discussion about whether PC would have assessment day 1X or 2X a year.

College-wide Assessment:
We need to better organize and obtain greater discipline representation and inclusion in our student outcomes samples, so that assessment truly becomes "college-wide." We need to develop an integrated plan and begin to follow that, to move toward "college-wide." Georgia Gudykunst, Brent Jameson and Marian Tadano will work on this.

Next Meeting:
January 18th, 12 PM, Admin. Conference Room

Respectfully submitted,
Georgia Gudykunst
