Phoenix College BearNet Wireless Network FAQ

The Phoenix College BearNet is a free wireless Internet service available to current Phoenix College students and employees.

Where can I access BearNet?  BearNet Internet access is currently available in a number of popular locations including the Hannelly Center and all three floors of the Fannin Library.  More wireless hotspots will be added in the future. View the BearNet wireless map to get an overview of current and planned locations.

How do I connect to the Phoenix College BearNet? Accessing BearNet is straightforward and resembles the interface of other hotspot providers:

1.      Use your computer’s wireless utility to connect to the network called “Phoenix College BearNet” (also known as the SSID).

2.      Open a web browser.  You should be redirected to the Phoenix College BearNet login screen.  If not, enter the word “login” in your browsers address bar.

3.      Read and accept the Phoenix College Policy for Use of Information Technologies

4.      Enter your student or employee account (PCLAN) username and password and click on the Submit button.

What account do I use to access BearNet?  To sign in to BearNet use your Phoenix College student or employee network account (PCLAN) username and password.  If you are a current student who does not have an account, follow this link to create your student account.  PC employees may contact the Technology Support Helpdesk at 5-7200 or click here

Are there any other rules or restrictions I must abide by while using BearNet?  The Phoenix College Policy for Use of Information Technologies list acceptable uses for the wireless Internet access as well as other technology resources on campus. Violation of these standards will be dealt with appropriately.

In order to provide the optimal network experience for all our users, certain activities or network traffic may be abridged.  This includes known security hazards, peer-to-peer file sharing, and other activities which monopolize network resources.

Is PC BearNet secure?  No, just like the wireless offered in coffee shops, airports, and many other public places the wireless Internet access offered by BearNet is not secure, unless you are using a web page, like the BearNet login page, with SSL encryption (look for the lock symbol).  Please exercise the proper precautions to ensure your safety.

Do I need to sign out when I am done using BearNet?  Your BearNet session will time out automatically after 20 minutes of inactivity.  If you have pop-ups enabled, you will be presented with a window that you can use to log out sooner.

What are the time restrictions on BearNet?   There is no limit on how many hours per day you may spend using the wireless Internet.  However, the system will require you to log in again after three consecutive hours.  In addition, idle sessions are closed after 20 minutes.

The BearNet service runs Monday through Thursday from 6 am until 10 pm and  from 6am until 5 pm Friday and Saturday.  The system may be down for maintenance during non-service hours.

Can I access my email account?  To prevent the use of BearNet for sending spam, outgoing email submission to the Internet via the SMTP protocol is blocked.  Students will need to use their email provider’s web mail solution to access and send email messages.  Employees using the MEMO email system may continue to use their standard email client.

Can I print while connected to BearNet?  No, at this time printing from BearNet is not supported.

To which wireless standards does BearNet conform?  BearNet supports both  802.11b and 802.11g devices.

What if I need help with my computer?  Unfortunately, Phoenix College cannot provide technical support for personal computers and Internet capable devices.

What if I have more questions about BearNet?  Please use this form to submit any questions or comments regarding BearNet.
